Five Villages (Cinque Terre)

So Beautiful

Approaching Vernazza from Monterosso

Clare having a swim (kev wasn't allowed to take a closeup :)

Very narrow path in places with no side rail

Getting higher

So many steps

Higher still
This morning we took the train to Vernazza and walked to Corniglia. It took about an hour and a half and was very up and down. It was very cold when we set out and I was glad to be walking and warm up. Then we took the train to Riomaggiore and walked the lovers trail (20 mins) All along the trail are padlocks that people have written their names on and hung on anything available along the trail. The theory is that your love will last as long as the padlocks hang there. The end of the walk was Manarola. So we have been to all 5 villages. Incredibly beautiful and unique.

There was a scrum to get on the train back to Monterosso. We were jamed in like sardines and Kev caused some entertainment when he lost his balance and gracefully fell over backwards. Luckily there wasn't enough room to fall down and the nearby people just pushed him upright again.

Hear the All Blacks play Aust in the semis. We sat next to an Australian at lunch and had an interesting discussion.

I forgot to tell you about La Horse. That is what Kevin calls my suitcase because he reckons it weighs as much as a horse. Although it is a pain to carry it is great to pull because people stop running into me in crowds when I am towing it. The locals just set the path to where they are going and don't move off it. Is like a big game of chicken and its usually me who blinks first. So this means I zigzag down the footpaths trying not to get pushed. But when I am towing la horse people are much more inclined to get out of my way.

We had breakfast in a cafe this morning for the first time. We had what they call an American breakfast which was orange juice (which is beautiful here) eggs cooked like omelette, toast and coffee. I discovered I can drink italian coffee if I put a wee bit of sugar in it. So that is a bit of a breakthrough.

Will upload some photos now.  Off to Rome in the morning.

  1. Brilliant photos, guys, god Italy is beautiful! I loved that bridge in Florence too. Did you buy anything?

Love the la horse story, good to hear you're holding your own against some stroppy Italians ;)

We all good here. First day of the holidays so nice and relaxed. Lots of cuddles with dogs. Naki has got the hang of curling up for a sleep on my knee in the last few days which is very nice. Razz still fat, I told her this morn we only have 4 weeks left to work on that!!

Glad you guys are good. Enjoy Rome, I am sure you will love it. Talk soon xxx
